The WHO’s Florence is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool for tobacco cessation. She is available 24/7 to provide digital counseling to tobacco users in need of support to help them quit. In this activity, you will interact with her and identify how she uses components of brief interventions.
Step 1: Think
Pretend that you are a patient who wants to receive advice about tobacco cessation but does not want to visit a doctor. Prepare some questions that you would like to ask about cessation.
Step 2: Review
Spend approximately 10-15 minutes interacting with Florence. Ask her different questions on tobacco use and cessation and pay attention to her responses and how she steers the conversation. Consider the following:
- How does Florence use the 5A’s and 5R’s?
- What useful strategies or information does Florence give?
- Suggest how Florence can aid in helping tobacco users make a quit attempt/remain abstinent.
Step 3: Write
Create a short post (150 - 300 words) about your experience, with your answers to the points above. Upload your post to the discussion forum.
Step 4: Share
To share your work, click on the “Add a new discussion topic” button under the post and paste your work in the “Message” box. Make sure to reference others’ intellectual property when necessary. All references should follow 7th Edition APA formatting. For further instructions, see the resource on the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library: APA citation resource (N.B. references are excluded from word counts).
Step 5: Interact
To complete this activity, you will need to reply respectfully and professionally to at least one post made by your peers. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “Post to forum.” If your peer(s) comment(s) on your post(s), please reply. Feel free to interact with the work done by other peers as well!OPTIONAL Step 6: Interact (10 minutes)
If you would like to, you can reply to your peers' posts in a respectful and professional manner. Ensure that your post engages your peers' ideas by including a reflection on their comments, sharing ideas of other potential difficulties and parties involved, or asking thought-provoking questions. If a peer comments on your posting, please reply. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “Post to forum.”

In this activity, you will determine the suitability of tobacco cessation interventions for your country to help tobacco users quit smoking and remain abstinent.
Step 1: Analyze
Consider the scenario below:
You have recently started working as a healthcare provider in a local clinic. During your experience, you have noticed that even though a high proportion of your tobacco-using patients make attempts at quitting, the majority are unsuccessful. They indicate that they struggle with a lack of support and assistance. As such, you have decided to make a suggestion to your Ministry of Health regarding tobacco cessation services to improve rates of quitting tobacco use among patients.
Step 2: Identify
Identify the tobacco cessation interventions that are currently used in your country. Consider the following:
- Strengths
- Weaknesses
- Outcomes (if the information is available)
From the interventions discussed in this module (or any other interventions you are aware of), select 2-3 interventions that you would recommend for implementation in your country. Reflect on each of the interventions identified and explain why you think they will be beneficial for your country. Consider the following:
- Strengths
- Weaknesses
- Accessibility to the population
- Practicality/how useful it is for patients
Step 3: Write
Create a short discussion post (300 - 400 words) with your answers to Step 1 and Step 2 above and upload it to the discussion forum.
Feel free to interact with the work done by other peers as well!
OPTIONAL Step 6: Interact (10 minutes)
If you would like to, you can reply to your peers' posts in a respectful and professional manner. Ensure that your post engages your peers' ideas by including a reflection on their comments, sharing ideas of other potential difficulties and parties involved, or asking thought-provoking questions. If a peer comments on your posting, please reply. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “Post to forum.”
