Activity 5: Psychiatric Emergencies (230 minutes) Forum
In this activity, you will write an analysis of a given fictional case and recommend strategies to effectively evaluate and manage a patient.
Step 1. Analyze (30 minutes)
Analyze the fictional case below:
A 23-year-old woman is rushed to the emergency room by her boyfriend after accidental ingestion of hydrochloric acid. The woman is vomiting violently with blood and has extreme drooling. Prior to her delivery to the emergency room, she asked her boyfriend to give her fresh milk in an attempt to ease her throat pain, even if she couldn’t swallow anymore. Previously, the woman was diagnosed with a panic disorder which contributed not only to her current condition but also to the delay of treatment.
As the resident physician with experience handling emergencies [medical and psychiatric], how will you respond to this situation?
Step 2. Respond (180 minutes)
Write a 300-600 word case analysis that addresses the following questions:
- What are some potential barriers to faster and immediate treatment of the patient?
- What strategies will you employ in the evaluation and management of patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies, especially the patient diagnosed with panic disorder from the case?
- Which treatment plans are most appropriate for the patient’s recovery?
