  • Learning Objectives:

    • Describe the function and structure of skeletal, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.
    • Explain how muscles work with tendons to move the body.
    • Describe how muscles contract and relax.
    • Define the process of muscle metabolism.
    • Explain how the nervous system controls muscle tension.

    • In this learning activity, you will assess a scenario on muscle soreness and describe the process that accounts for this. (200 min)

      Step 1: Review

Review the required learning resources for this lesson

      Muscle Fiber Contraction and Relaxation

      Step 2: Analyze

Study the hypothetical case scenario below.

It is the beginning of a new football season. After a break from sports and workouts, Samson is excited about playing for his new club. His first training session with his coach was good. Samson pushed himself beyond his endurance limit to impress Coach Fredrick. He engaged in various activities, including a 200-meter race, intense cardio training, and an hour of weight lifting. Everything was fine with Samson until two days after his training session when he started experiencing soreness, aches, and painful sensation in muscles around his shoulder, thigh, and calf.

      Step 3: Respond

Prepare a 500- 600 word assessment describing the process involved in muscle soreness. Consider the following points:

      • Describe the sequence of events involved in a muscle contraction.
      • Explain muscle contraction and the metabolic changes that occur in the muscle during contraction.
      • Explain muscle relaxation and the metabolic changes that occur in the muscle during relaxation.
      • Describe the relationship between muscle metabolism and muscle fatigue.

      Step 4: Share

To share your work, click on the “Add a new discussion topic” button under this post and paste your work in the “Message” box. Make sure to reference others’ intellectual property when necessary. All references should follow 7th Edition APA formatting. For further instructions, see the resource on the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library: APA citation resource (N.B. references are excluded from word counts).

      Step 5: Interact

Evaluate and categorize the work from one of your peers based on items A - F of the rubric below. Provide a rationale for the grade you have provided, as well as comments or suggestions for improvement. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “Post to forum.”

You can use the list below as an example:

Item A is  .…. because….  My suggestions for improvement are….
Item B is  .…. because….  My suggestions for improvement are….
Item C is  .…. because….  My suggestions for improvement are….
Item D is  .…. because….  My suggestions for improvement are….
Item E is  .…. because….  My suggestions for improvement are….
Item F is  .…. because….  My suggestions for improvement are….

OPTIONAL Step 6: Interact (10 minutes)

If you would like to, you can reply to your peers' posts in a respectful and professional manner. Ensure that your post engages your peers' ideas by including a reflection on their comments, sharing ideas of other potential difficulties and parties involved, or asking thought-provoking questions. If a peer comments on your posting, please reply. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “Post to forum.”
