        Introduction

The aim of this course is to explore health systems, focusing on those in low- to middle-income countries. The course would be suitable for any health professional either working in or interested in health systems in developing countries.

The need to understand, and to improve, health systems is well encapsulated by this quote from U.S. President Obama who stated: “We will not be successful in our efforts to end deaths from AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis unless we do more to improve the health systems around the world” (5 May 2009).

The World Bank is also a key player in health systems: "In the era of sustainable development goals, the World Bank plays a pivotal role in promoting universal health coverage and strengthening health systems," from Universal health coverage, health systems strengthening, and the World Bank.

The course is designed to help you:

        1. Understand the attributes of health systems, the role of leadership and governance, and the potential of Health Systems Strengthening.
        2. Understand the role of various forms of health financing and health insurance, with relevance for developing countries.
        3. Identify what is needed for quality improvement in patient care and health care systems, and the importance of health information to measure process and outcome.
        4. Explain the importance of the availability of essential drugs, procedures, vaccines and technology (using vaccines as a case study).
        5. Understand the importance of an adequate, well-trained, and well-performing health workforce.

This course is an Open Online Course (OOC) and was created and has been adopted from Peoples-uni. It was further developed by NextGenU.org (NGU).

In this activity, you will reflect on one of the six dimensions of quality healthcare and consider, for addiction-related settings in your country or region, how this dimension might be improved and the potential role of information in that improvement.

          Step 1. Select [5 minutes]

Select one from the 6 dimensions of quality healthcare below:

          • Safety
          • Effectiveness
          • Person-centeredness
          • Accessibility, Timeliness, Affordability
          • Equity
          • Efficiency

          Step 2. Analyze [30 minutes]

Reflect and analyze how this dimension can be improved for addiction-related settings in your country or region.

          Step 3. Respond [105 minutes]

Prepare a 200-400 word reflective piece of writing that covers the following components:

          • Current issues relating to the chosen dimension in addiction settings in your country or region
          • Ways to improve the selected dimension to address the needs in an addiction-related setting (list at least 2 potential solutions)
          • Potential role of information in the improvement of the chosen dimensions of quality healthcare in addiction-related settings

          Step 4. Share [10 minutes]

To share your work, click on the “Add a new discussion topic” button under this post and paste your work into the “Message” box. Make sure to reference others’ intellectual property when necessary. All references should follow 7th Edition APA formatting. For further instructions, see the resource on the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library: APA citation resource (N.B. references are excluded from word counts).

OPTIONAL Step 5: Interact (10 minutes)

If you would like to, you can reply to your peers' posts in a respectful and professional manner. Ensure that your post engages your peers' ideas by including a reflection on their comments, sharing ideas of other potential difficulties and parties involved, or asking thought-provoking questions. If a peer comments on your posting, please reply. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback, and then click on “Post to forum.”
