        Introduction

Today, there are approximately 370 million Indigenous peoples located in 70 countries around the world (United Nations, n.d.). Indigenous peoples are often at greater risk for ill health, as indicated by their high prevalence of major chronic diseases including diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and mental disorders. However, given their disadvantaged and marginalized status in society, indigenous peoples often do not have access to quality professional services (e.g. medical) that may be used to redress their poor health outcomes. In addition, both the number and quality of professionals competent in indigenous health are lacking globally.

This  Indigenous Health course is intended for those in the health and social sciences fields, such as medical work, social work, and public health professionals in training and practice. This course takes a global perspective in examining the health and health disparities of indigenous peoples and provides historical, theoretical, analytical, and practical knowledge and tools to address them. Along the way, this course will facilitate an open and culturally safe dialogue among a global network of peers on comparative strategies to improve the health outcomes of indigenous peoples both locally and internationally.

The course is designed to help you:

        1. Identify the barriers that make the interaction between indigenous populations and health services difficult.
        2. Summarize the determinants of health of indigenous populations.
        3. Identify strategies to promote cultural safety in caring for indigenous populations.
        4. Analyze approaches to optimizing indigenous populations’ health through a just allocation of healthcare resources and access to health care services.
        5. Contribute to the development, dissemination, and critical assessment of knowledge/practices related to the improvement of indigenous populations’ health.

Approximate time for completion of this course is 42 hours at an average reading rate of 144 words/minute.

There are three (3) modules to complete, which include:

Module 1: Health Determinants of Aboriginal Populations

Module 2: Promoting Aboriginal Population's Health

Module 3: Moving Towards an Equitable Future

In this activity, you will analyze a news article and write a reflective piece of writing that identifies the barriers to accessing Indigenous healthcare and summarizes the determinants of Indigenous health.

          Step 1. Analyze [30 minutes]

Read this news article: What is the prevalence of current alcohol dependence and how is it measured for Indigenous people in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America? A systematic review. Based on the article, analyze the possible root causes behind high death rates related to alcohol abuse among the Indigenous populations, including the following components:

          • Barriers to accessing health care services for Indigenous people
          • Determinants of the health of Indigenous populations

          Step 2. Reflect [30 minutes]

Reflect on the article and think of one situation in the Indigenous population of your region that shows difficulties in the interaction between Indigenous people and health care services, as well as determinants of health related to alcohol consumption in your region’s Indigenous populations.

          Step 3. Respond [180 minutes]

Based on the article and the current health status of the Indigenous people of your region, prepare a 300-600 word reflective piece of writing that discusses the following:

          1. Barriers and facilitators to accessing health care services for Indigenous populations
          2. Health determinants of Indigenous people
          3. Documented examples of these barriers and health determinants in your region's Indigenous population

          Step 4. Share [10 minutes]

To share your work, click on the “Add a new discussion topic” button under this post and paste your work into the “message” box. Make sure to reference others’ intellectual property when necessary. All references should follow 7th Edition APA formatting. For further instructions, see the resource on the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library: APA citation resource (N.B. references are excluded from word counts).

          Step 5. Interact [10 minutes]

To complete the activity, you will need to reply to at least one post made by your peers in a respectful and professional manner. Be sure that your post engages your peers' ideas by including a reflection on their comments, sharing ideas of other potential difficulties and parties involved, or asking thought-provoking questions. If a peer comments on your posting, please reply. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “post to forum.”

OPTIONAL Step 6: Interact (10 minutes)

If you would like to, you can reply to your peers' posts in a respectful and professional manner. Ensure that your post engages your peers' ideas by including a reflection on their comments, sharing ideas of other potential difficulties and parties involved, or asking thought-provoking questions. In this activity, you will gather information and make a concept map analysis of three different approaches across regions used to optimize Indigenous populations’ health.

          Step 1. Research [30 minutes]

Look for information about different approaches used to optimize Indigenous populations’ health through a just allocation of healthcare resources and access to healthcare services across the following regions:

          • Asia
          • Africa
          • Americas
          • Europe
          • Australia

          Step 2. Analyze [30 minutes]

Select three regions and analyze the approaches used in these regions to optimize Indigenous populations, including the following components:

          • Approaches related to the allocation of resources and health service provision to individuals, families, and communities
          • Other methods and approaches used to address the mental health and substance addiction problems of the Indigenous population.
          • Distinct characteristics and strengths of these approaches

          Step 3. Respond [200 minutes]

Create a one-page [A4 size] concept map to show the interconnectedness of your three chosen regions in terms of their different approaches and components mentioned in Step 2. Include a 100-300 word explanation of how these approaches can be adapted to your own region’s Indigenous populations.

          Step 5: Evaluate [10 minutes]

Evaluate and categorize the work from one of your peers based on items A - E of the rubric below. Provide a rationale for the grade you have provided, as well as comments or suggestions for improvement. To post a reply, click “Reply” on a particular discussion, write your feedback and then click on “Post to the forum.” You can use the list below as an example:

In this activity, you will develop an action plan to address a specific health issue affecting the selected Indigenous population.

          Step 1. Select [ 30 minutes]

Think of yourself as a researcher whose work focuses on Indigenous populations. Select a specific Indigenous community of your choice and gather information on various health issues affecting the population.

          • Health

Read the website to identify the main health issues that affect Indigenous people.

          Step 2. Analyze [30 minutes]

Analyze the various health issues affecting your chosen Indigenous community. Use the following questions to guide your analysis:

          • Which among the health issues affecting the population needs a topmost priority?
          • How is the specific health issue developed?
          • How can you describe the severity of the specific health issue to the selected Indigenous community?
          • What are the current knowledge and practices used to address the issue as well as to improve the overall Indigenous population health?

          Step 3. Respond [200 minutes]

Develop a simple action plan (400-750 words) that articulates the action steps or changes to be brought about in your Indigenous community in response to the questions presented in Step 2. To be more specific, the action plan must include the following components:

          • A well-defined description of the goal to be achieved
          • Tasks/steps/changes that need to be carried out to reach the goal
          • People who will be in charge of carrying out each task
          • When these tasks will be completed (deadlines and milestones)
          • Resources needed to complete the tasks
          • Possible adaptation to specific health issues such as mental health and substance use/abuse
          • Modes of communication to disseminate information about the action plan

          Step 4. Share [10 minutes]

To share your work, click on the “Reply” button under this post and paste your work into the “message” box. Make sure to reference others’ intellectual property when necessary.
