There are 3 units/modules to complete, which include:
- Unit 4: Nursing care of the sick child
- Unit 5: Child Maltreatment
- Unit 6: Community-Based Pediatric Nursing Care
Instructions:
This part consists of three (3) learning units. Included in the units are individual lessons with accompanying assigned reading resources, PowerPoint presentations with speaker notes, learner self-assessments, and interactive clinical judgment learning activities. A passing grade of 80% is required on quizzes and unit exams, as well as submission of the required activities for all case studies/reflection activities to gain access to the next lesson or section.
There is a 50-question multiple-choice exam at the end of the course. A grade of 80% is required. If a grade of 80% is not achieved, the learner may be self-remediate and take another exam. The second exam is of comparable content, and 80% is required for a passing grade.
A certificate of completion may be downloaded upon successful completion of the course.
To PASS and Obtain a Certificate
- All the reading requirements;
- All quizzes and unit exams with a passing grade of 80%;
- All activities and case studies;
- The final exam with a minimum of 80% and a maximum of 2 attempts, and;
- The self and course evaluation forms.

Unit Objectives:

- Demonstrate understanding of the pathophysiology of childhood acute and chronic diseases.
- Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based nursing care to address the needs of children with acute or chronic physical, and/or mental illness in a hospital and community setting.
- Gain knowledge and skill in pediatric drug administration.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in nursing response during a pediatric emergency.
- Provide appropriate health promotion and health education to a child and family.
- Demonstrate effective holistic palliative care for a child with cancer and their family.

Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:- Identify major stressors of illness and hospitalization for children.
- Explain factors influencing children’s and families' reactions to hospitalization.
- Identify strategies a nurse can utilize to minimize stressors for children and their families during hospitalization.
- Discuss the nurses’ role in caring for hospitalized child and their families.
- Discuss and apply appropriate safety measures to use when caring for children within the hospital.
- Discuss nursing roles/responsibilities related to client discharge from the hospital.
