Activity 6: Legislation and Public Health (180 minutes) Forum
You will discuss how legislation ensures the quality of public health and how it shapes the progression of public health.
Instructions:
Step 1: Review and Identify
Review the learning resources on how legislation ensures the quality of public health, and look at the role of the IHR (2005).
Step 2: Discuss
In 300-400 words, write a discussion on the role of legislation in ensuring quality public health and for progression in the field.
Your discussion should include:What you think is the importance of having legislation in public health and how it encourages countries to strive for a level of quality in public health.
Your views on how legislation has shaped and facilitated public health progression and how you think it will continue to do this in the future.
Make sure to use at least one example to support your arguments for each of the points above.

You are provided with two examples of legislation related to health protection, promotion, and well-being internationally and based in Europe. You are required to research and compare these examples with the equivalent regulation in your country.
Instructions:
Step 1: Review and Research
Review the provided international and European legislation:
International Health Regulations (2005) [Visions and Goals pages 13 to 16]
Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union: Article 168 (protection of public health)
Then, research similar legislation in your country.
Step 2: Evaluate
In 900-1000 words, you will now evaluate and compare the three pieces of legislation. Your evaluation should:
Compare and discuss how well each legislation achieves health protection, promotion, and well-being.
State which of the three you think will hold a country’s government most accountable if public health standards and duties are not held, and why.
State if you think any legislation seems more powerful or effective than the others, and why?
