    • In this activity, you will analyze a news article and write a reflective piece of writing that identifies the barriers to accessing Indigenous healthcare and summarizes the determinants of Indigenous health.

      Step 1. Analyze [30 minutes]

Read this news article: What is the prevalence of current alcohol dependence and how is it measured for Indigenous people in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America? A systematic review. Based on the article, analyze the possible root causes behind high death rates related to alcohol abuse among the Indigenous populations, including the following components:

      • Barriers to accessing health care services for Indigenous people
      • Determinants of the health of Indigenous populations

      Step 2. Reflect [30 minutes]

Reflect on the article and think of one situation in the Indigenous population of your region that shows difficulties in the interaction between Indigenous people and health care services, as well as determinants of health related to alcohol consumption in your region’s Indigenous populations.

      Step 3. Respond [180 minutes]

Based on the article and the current health status of the Indigenous people of your region, prepare a 300-600 word reflective piece of writing that discusses the following:

      1. Barriers and facilitators to accessing health care services for Indigenous populations
      2. Health determinants of Indigenous people
      3. Documented examples of these barriers and health determinants in your region's Indigenous population

      Step 4. Share [10 minutes]
